Love the poetic way John Mellencamp paid tribute to Tom Petty on his Facebook page:
“Tom Petty was the Edward Hopper of American songwriters,” it begins. “He was a certain kind of bird that had no legs, so he could never land on this earth; he lived his whole life in the sky. And now he will spread his wings and sleep on the wind. His name is written in the stars. John Mellencamp.”
“It’s shocking, crushing news,” Bob Dylan said in a statement to Rolling Stone. “I thought the world of Tom. He was a great performer, full of the light, a friend, and I’ll never forget him.”
“I’m shocked and saddened by the news of Tom’s passing, he’s such a huge part of our musical history, there’ll never be another like him,” Eric Clapton told the Associated Press in a statement.
Joe Elliott of Def Leppard
“Through his work with the Heartbreakers and The Traveling Wilburys he’s left us with an incredibly legacy to enjoy forever, it’s such a shame he has left us way before his time.”
Dear Tom, so sad to hear of his passing. What a lovely, intelligent and talented man he was. Love to his family.
Jon Bon Jovi
I’m crushed…Praying for all those affected by Vegas last night.
And now the loss of one of my great influences Tom Petty today.
“It is so rare to find someone who commands such universal respect in the business,” Alice Cooper tweeted. “He was a rock n roll lifer with music in his blood. This man delivered a wealth of great songs to his fans and to the world and that is something to celebrate.”
So sad about Tom Petty, he made some great music. Thoughts are with his family.
Paul Stanley of KISS
No! We have lost Tom Petty. From our opening act in the seventies to becoming a brilliant songwriter and performer I have loved his music.
I can’t believe we have lost Tom Petty on this already horrible day. My love to his wife & children and the entire Heartbreaker family.
no words. just thanks.
