Tom Petty grew up just 2 hours away from us – in Gainesville. Although he and his family had little to do with the goings-on at the University of Florida while he was growing up, he has said if he had to choose a college team to root for, it would be the Florida Gators.

As a Florida alumna, I can tell you that simply attending that school makes you a Petty fan. It was so cool to walk around the city and know that he walked those same streets as a boy before anybody knew who he was.
So I was thrilled to read that this Saturday, when the Gators take on the Louisiana State University Tigers, they will make an adjustment to a long-standing tradition to honor Tom Petty.
At the end of the 3rd quarter, Gators in the stands sway, while singing “We Are the Boys from Old Florida.” At this Saturday’s game, they will keep on singing…Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down”.
Florida Athletic Director Scott Stricklin said, “Let’s celebrate together what he meant to the world of music and what he meant to this community. Since we are already singing ‘We are the Boys’, let’s go right from that into one of his great anthems and make that the way we are going to jointly celebrate Tom Petty and the Gators.”
I like it! And I hope it becomes a FOREVER tradition.
The Florida-LSU game is this Saturday at 3:30pm on CBS.
